1. What is Moxibustion and KOHKI method
The history of medicine is, for the most part, the story of human usage of various plants and herbs. Plants and herbs contain a myriad of chemical compounds that have the potential to regulate body cells and heal sickness. That is, they store the healing energy within themselves. Both humans and animals know it well instinctively.
Even if it may seem somewhat unusual to those unfamiliar with it, the concept of moxibustion is quite straightforward. Moxibustion is the masterful way of harnessing the healing energy of plants and herbs by lighting them up and applying them safely to the human body. It has always been an important element of Traditional Eastern Asian Medicine (TEAM). Especially in Japan, it has been widely loved and practised by not only professionals but also ordinary people. Everyone from Buddhist monks, samurai, merchant travellers, and poets to children, the elderly, and pregnant women have practised moxibustion. It is certainly a long-revered ‘people’s medicine’.
Our moxa style, KOHKI method, is one of the newest schools of moxibustion developed in 20th-century Japan. Using a compacted incense stick placed within an elegantly designed aluminium moxa holder, Kohki method enables us to perform moxa more powerfully and easily than ever without fear of burning the skin. In addition, there is no mess with ash during treatment.
The purest form of moxa energy is released from the top of the lightweight metal tube and gently applied at acupoints or along the channels to effectively energise our state of Qi. The heated incense may also be vigorously moved and stroked in a wave-like motion by the practitioner to release stagnation in the area concerned not only locally but also along the entire channel system. Its dynamic mode of application is a stark contrast to the static manner of other standard types of moxibustion.
Using this method, moxa reaches deep inside the body, even through clothes.
2. All our products are organic and made by hand.
As well as the moxa holder, the moxa incense that we use is also our original product. We make it ourselves in our own clinic to the highest standards.
The incense formula includes more than 10 medicinal raw herbs, which are all directly delivered from a certified organic herb farming company in Port Macquarie, NSW (Empirical Health Shop®). The raw materials are ground, mixed, shaped, and baked by us personally. No preservatives or other chemicals are included.
This is how we ensure our moxa treatment is powered by the purest form of natural energy emitted from 100% organic, unadulterated herbs and plants.
This is a lifelong mission for us, and we don’t mind being considered obsessive about the quality of our incense. It’s an indication of how serious and passionate we are about the quality of energy (Qi) promoted by our treatments.
Once you’ve experienced our moxa, you will be able to appreciate the quality of these organic herbs. There’s an exquisite feel on the skin as well as a very pleasant aroma from the non-irritating pure smoke.
It is our greatest mission at Art of Moxa, to offer the highest quality moxa treatment. In our minds there is no room for compromise in standards of what we use daily for ourselves as well as for our valued clients.
3. About Our Team
Ko and Aki, both from Japan, are currently the only two team members of Art of Moxa.
They met each other in Tokyo and learned Kohki method from senior masters of this modality there. They both had careers as moxa practitioners for a while and came to Australia to spread this overseas.
Ko has been qualified as an AHPRA registered acupuncturist (and Aki will be soon later in 2025), and they both are working full-time as health practitioners in Brisbane.
